Ways to Stay Healthy and Productive During the Summer!
As classes moved online and stay at home orders were locked into place, many of us found ourselves stuck at home with nothing to do. Even worse, many summer plans and internships have likely been canceled or postponed. With all of this free time, it can be overwhelming when deciding what to do with your time! Here are a couple of ideas to help you stay healthy and productive during the summer!
Take a Summer Class
Have you ever wanted to learn more about a subject that you normally would not have the opportunity to learn about during the school year? This summer is a perfect time to delve deeper into a subject you are interested in or expand your horizons to learn about something new! With Coursera, free online courses from top universities, such as Yale, Harvard, Stanford, etc. are available for you to stream. Subjects range from psychology to machine learning to fashion!

Start a New Hobby
During normal circumstances, the routine of everyday life often makes us too busy to try new things. With everyone being stuck at home, this is a great opportunity to try something new. Maybe you will end up finding something you love! Learn to bake or dive into painting, or maybe try your hand at knitting or embroidery! The possibilities are endless.

Do a Fun and Interesting Project
Is there something that you are really passionate about? Maybe you have always wanted to explore something further but never had the time. If your summer internship or research opportunities are canceled, why not take the time to research something on your own? There is tons of research you can do in the comfort of your own home, and professors and advisors are only a zoom call away! There are also many opportunities for undergraduates in terms of research grants and publications.

Spend Time with Family and Friends
A lot of times, people think that being productive needs to involve work of some sort. In reality, productivity can be represented in any way as long as you are engaging yourself! Take this time at home to interact with your family. Being at college and work often detracts from quality family time. To college students, your parents miss you while you are at school! Take some time to hang out with them whether it’s by playing board games, exercising, or even just talking. The same applies to friends if you are quarantining with them! Frequent zoom or skype calls with family and friends will also help lessen the loneliness of quarantine.

Take Time for Yourself or Do Something You Love
Although I do encourage you to try the ideas I suggested above, it is very understandable that many of you may be feeling overwhelmed and not ready to try something new. With a global pandemic happening, you do not have to feel pressured to try new things or take on a new project. Sometimes it can be extremely helpful to just relax and take time for yourself, or get back into something you loved doing in the past! Practicing mindfulness and doing things that genuinely make you happy can definitely help you get through these stressful times. Just remember, everyone is in the same boat going through this together, but it is okay if your experience or feelings are different from what others are thinking and feeling around you. Be gentle with yourself, and remember that taking care of yourself is the most important thing right now!
